Skipbridge development goes through on Appeal

The long fight in Hurworth Ward to stop Skipbridge brickworks from being turned into a caravan and leisure park has ended in defeat for the campaigners.

The matter was decided last month by a planning inspector from the south of England visiting the site for a few hours.

Martin Swainston and Malcolm Dunstone objected strongly and made personal representations to the Borough Planning Committee. Neasham and Hurworth Parish Councils and many concerned residents also made their views heard. Despite all this, the Inspector gave permission for the development to go ahead.

The inspector appointed to deal with the appeal granted permission for the work to begin as long a series of conditions were met. These vary in nature but include items such as providing a public right of way.

No development can take place until the local Council has approved such things as the design and material finishes of the buildings on site and the design of the static caravans.

Details of the hard and soft landscaping, the access road, water disposal, external lighting and nature conservation all have to be approved by the Council.

Our councillors' job now will be to ensure that all these conditions are met and adhered to prior to the site opening. We will ensure Darlington Borough Council planners enforce these conditions.

It is vital that the site's impact on local residents is minimised. Martin and Malcolm will be seeking regular updates with the planners to make sure this work happens.
