At last. Road flooding in Hurworth to be dealt with9.00.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 22nd Sep 2008 After three years of fighting to get the problem solved, works to stop the floods on the road from Hurworth to Neasham will begin later in the year! Since his election in 2005, Martin Swainston has been fighting for the installation of a proper drain on the road, which has suffered terrible flooding for many years. With the election of Malcolm Dunstone in 2007 the two Lib Dem councillors have been able to present a united front to the Council to get this work done. The situation has been further exacerbated by the construction of the footpath linking the two villages. Regular users of this footpath are often soaked by passing vehicles, as the water cannot drain away properly. Following yet more awkward questions in Council and requests to officers, the Highways Department has just completed a drainage scheme to rectify the flooding problem. To ensure the completion of the job, a temporary 30 mph speed limit has been in force on road for 3 months from September 1st to allow for the installation of a full road drain and new kerbing. It is hoped that the work will be completed ahead of the worst of the winter weather. Martin and Malcolm's hard work has paid off again!
